So You Want to be an Intern

So You Want to be an Intern

Welcome to part 1 of a step by step guide to snag an internship. Our goal is to make sure the basic questions are answered by the end of this series and that you’re well prepared for anything that might pop up along the way. Since this is only part 1, let’s dive into the basics and figure out what we hope to answer by the time this series is all said and done.

Where do you want to work?

Maybe it’s one of the big 4. What about a startup? A Fortune 100 might be to your fancy. Wherever you want to go, there are some generic steps you’ll need to take. Knowing the end goal will help refine some of the work you need to do, however. Don’t worry if your answer is, “anywhere that will hire me.” Eventually we’ll figure out the pros and cons of the basic types of companies you’ll encounter; hopefully you’ll be lucky enough to have competing offers to pick exactly where you think you’ll fit best.

What do you want to do?

Perhaps more important than the where is the what. Do you want to do mobile development? Web apps? What about system integration? Odds are you don’t know all the options available to you, and that’s alright. My first internship was with a language I had never used with tools I had never heard of in a field I had never studied and I loved it. I learned more than I ever could’ve if I stayed in my comfort zone, but you might already know what you want and that can work too.

How do you get there?

Is there anything you can do now to prepare yourself for the job you want? Yes! Are you a soon to be college freshman preparing for college and hoping to make yourself the best candidate possible? There’s also things for you to do, but it’s probably not what you think. We’ll touch on all that and more!
